Living cultures
Centuries ago, during what is now known as the Classic period (200-900 AD), the Mayan people created a unique and magnificent culture. Its temples, pyramids and palace complexes over densely populated cities, its brilliant art forms, its advanced knowledge of astronomy, as well as its writing systems were the most developed ones in the New World. Later, the Classic civilization collapsed, but the Mayan did not disappear.
Today there are about 4 million of them living in the lands of the Highlands of Chiapas, in the jungles and plains of southeastern Mexico; in Guatemala, Belize, the western zone of Honduras and El Salvador.
Over the centuries, the history of the Mayan has been characterized by ethnic adaptation and cohesion, as well as its deep cultural roots. Thanks to these elements, the continuity of this human group has been possible.
The Tsotsil, Tsetsales, Tojolabales and Lacandones ethnic groups, proud descendants of the Mayan culture, coexist alongside modern society creating a cultural mosaic rarely reproduced in Mexico, which makes this complex of elements one of the best options for a trip through Chiapas.
