Agua Azul Waterfalls Forest Protection Area and Wildlife Refuge

The Agua Azul Waterfalls Forest Protection Area and Wildlife Refuge, established in 1980, safeguards one of the most valuable ecosystems in Chiapas. This protected natural area preserves an important expanse of tropical evergreen rainforest and an extraordinary diversity of flora and fauna that find an ideal habitat for conservation within the region.

Among the plant species that enrich the landscape are trees such as guapaque, barí, sapodilla, and ramón, all characteristic of the lush tropical rainforest vegetation. This environment is also home to a remarkable variety of wildlife, including iconic species such as the jaguar, ocelot, tapir, spider monkey, howler monkey, anteater, boa constrictor, and numerous bat species. It also serves as a refuge for important bird species, including the scarlet macaw and the keel-billed toucan.
