La Sepultura Biosphere Reserve

The central zone of the Sierra Madre constitutes a long chain of increasing altitude heading southeast, often crowned with clouds. Its compact appearance is interrupted by some steps that since pre-Hispanic times were used for migration and trade between the coast and the Alto Grijalva basin.

One of those steps is La Sepultura, a dark name that designates the landscape that is traversed by one of the most sinuous roads in Mexico, but also more spectacular as it brings together the beauty of the relief, the coastal plain at its feet, the nearby sea and a vegetation now preserved within the limits of an ecological reserve, with an area of 67,309 hectares and seven different types of vegetation: mountain rain forest, cloud forest, cloudy thicket, pine-oak forest, sweetgum forest, jungle medium subperennifolia and deciduous forest. This ecological variety is linked to the climatic diversity since it goes from the freshness of the pine forests to the intense heat.
