Tacana Volcano Biosphere Reserve

The Tacaná or "La Casa del Fuego" is an active volcano of 4,093 meters high, the highest peak of the State of Chiapas and of the entire southeast of Mexico. With an area of 6,378 hectares in the municipalities of Tapachula, Cacahoatán and Unión Juárez.

This reserve is the habitat of numerous species of flora and fauna, for this reason it was declared a Biosphere Reserve in January 2003. It is inhabited by mesophilic forests, tropical and chusqueal paramo; towards the lower parts you can see the high jungle that as the terrain rises, it becomes a mountainous mantle and then a cloud forest. The flora has pines, oaks and conifers. Among the endemic species, the frailejones and orchids stand out.

Some animals found in the area are: the ocelot, the collared boar, the goat deer, the pajuil, the green toucan, the quetzal, the peacock bass and the crested eagle. Its geographical structure makes it a perfect place for lovers of mountaineering and hiking, although it is recommended to climb with a guide who knows the área.
