Every September 29, Chiapas unites to celebrate Saint Michael the Archangel. This festivity dates back to the colonial era, when devotion to the archangel was introduced by evangelizing friars. Since then, his presence has remained alive within the religious and cultural identity of various communities.
Today, municipalities such as Copainalá, Villa Las Rosas, Huixtán, and Tuxtla Gutiérrez hold masses, processions, dances, and traditional music, reflecting the cultural richness of Chiapas. In Tuzantán, where Saint Michael the Archangel is the Patron Saint, the celebration begins with daily processions involving residents from nearby neighborhoods and neighboring municipalities such as Huixtla. Festivities include traditional dance performances and cultural programs held in the church’s courtyard, strengthening the sense of community.
The celebration reaches its peak on September 29, when devotees from various locations gather to honor Saint Michael the Archangel. During the days of festivity, the parish invites the community to participate in masses, processions, and to support the tradition by purchasing food prepared for the occasion.
