Bonampak archaeological zone

Bonampak is a ceremonial center located in the heart of the jungle and its peak occurred during the government of the Eye of the Jaguar who ascended to the throne in 743 A.D. and was reflected in the stelae, lintels and mural paintings.

In this complex the Great Plaza and the Acropolis stand out. In the first one rises the magnificent Stela 1, that shows Chaan Muan II dressed with great luxury to celebrate his fifth year of government. It has three chambers, the first one shows the ceremony of presentation by the ruling family of the heir to the throne and the provisioning of the lord by various servants. In the same room you can see the scene of the procession of the musicians.

The second room shows the battle and the subsequent presents the torture of the prisoners. It emphasizes the presence of Chaan Muan II with a great headdress of jaguar skin. The battle took place on August 2, 792 AD. There is still no consensus on whether it is the crushing of a peasant rebellion or the victory over a neighboring group. In the third chamber there is a sumptuous ceremony celebrating the triumph. In it there are representations of dancers, nobles and musicians, all in front of Chaan Muan II, who performs a self-sacrifice to offer his blood to the gods.
