Toniná is located 85 kilometers from San Cristóbal de Las Casas, it is a sacred space formed by an artificial mountain with seven platforms. The site is accessed through the prisoners' courtyard, one of the largest of its time, located on the great platform, where the sacrificial altar is located. On the third platform hides the Palace of the Underworld, while on the fourth is the Palace of the Grecas and War.
On the slope of the sixth platform is the mural of the Four Suns, a kind of codex made of stucco that represents the myth of the four cosmogonic eras through which the world passes. In this mural the suns of each sky are represented by falling human heads. The representation of the god of death holding in his hands the head of a decapitated man stands out.
Also on the sixth platform can be seen the Temple of the Monster of the Earth, with the stucco representation of the monster devouring a stone solar sphere. This temple is oriented according to the winter and spring solstices. Finally, on the seventh platform are the temples of the Prisoners and the Smoking Mirror, the main one on the highest point of the complex, the highest in Mesoamerica. The visit to Toniná is completed with the marvelous Site Museum inaugurated in the year 2000.
