The site has been known as "Lagartero" since 1972, when the first settlers arrived, and because lizards were abundant in the Cienega then. The river is also named Lagartero.
Main chronological location: Late Classic, 600 to 900 AD. Lagartero played a very important role for the Late Classic period, serving as an intermediate point between the culture of the Mayan, Low and High Lands of Guatemala, and the central Chiapaneca depression. Due to the characteristics of its spatial distribution, its architecture and associated archaeological materials, Lagartero is a major Ceremonial Center in the upper Grijalva River basin, but politically it could be considered as a second-order site, compared to its contemporary neighbors such as Chinkultic.
From Comitán take the Federal Highway 190, in the direction of Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, at kilometer 56.7, before reaching the San Gregorio bridge, take the deviation that leads to the head of the Cristóbal Colón community. The architectural complexes are 1.5 km away from this last point, then You have to cross the Rio Lagartero by crossing several wooden bridges to reach the main section of the site.
