Discovering the Archaeological Museum of Comitán is a journey through thousands of years of history, offering visitors a deeper understanding of the ancient cultures that flourished in the Plains and Highlands of Chiapas. Located in the historic center of Comitán de Domínguez, the museum safeguards remarkable archaeological treasures from important Maya sites such as Tenam Puente, Chinkultic, Lagartero, and several caves throughout the region.
Accommodated in a building constructed in 1944—originally designed as a school and now shared with the Rosario Castellanos Public Library—the museum blends the architectural charm of its era with an engaging exhibition that brings Chiapas’ pre-Hispanic past to life. Its elegant Art Deco-inspired portico and traditional central courtyard, presided over by a bust of Comitán composer Esteban Alfonzo García, are among the cultural highlights of the property.
Narrated through its permanent galleries, the regional story unfolds from the earliest hunter-gatherer communities and the emergence of sedentary life to the rise of the Maya civilization and the development of trade routes that connected major city-states. Outstanding pieces include funerary urns decorated with geometric motifs, birds and felines, as well as stelae, sculptures, figurines, ritual objects, and artifacts recovered from the Cave of the Andasolos, a key archaeological discovery that helped shape much of the museum’s collection. The Tenam Puente Gallery highlights the political, economic, and ceremonial significance of this important archaeological site in the Comitán Valley, while the Eastern Caves Gallery presents objects associated with ancient rituals and beliefs linked to the underworld.
Inaugurated at its current location in 1993 through the joint efforts of local authorities and Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), the museum has become a cultural landmark for understanding the Maya legacy and the historical richness of southeastern Mexico. Its collection offers an enriching experience for visitors seeking to explore the archaeological heritage of Chiapas and discover the extraordinary legacy of the peoples who shaped this region.
