This Protected Natural Area was declared a protection area on September 23, 1998, with an area of 3,847.41 hectares, in order to conserve biodiversity, natural systems and complex ecological relationships, as well as protect the cultural importance of traditions and the knowledge of the Lacandon ethnic group, which subsists in the place due to the harmonious coexistence that they practice with the environment.
The close relationship that the indigenous group of the Nahá Subcommunity has maintained with the environment, has set the standard for development and social organization. The Lacandones maintain a worldview centered on nature. The protection of the area was the result of the concern of its inhabitants, for the destruction of natural resources, mainly due to invasions to their territory.
