Yaxchilán Natural Monument

Due to the importance of the Yaxchilán ruins, as well as its biological richness, this part of the Lacandon Jungle was decreed on August 21, 1992 as a Natural Monument. Its area is 2,621 hectares. It is home to numerous species of animals such as the jaguar, ocelot, tapir, spider monkey, saraguato monkey, scarlet macaw and harpy eagle, the latter endemic to the region, as well as river and swamp crocodiles.
