Located in the northwest of Chiapas, between the municipalities of Francisco León and Chapultenango, this colossus is known for the eruptions that occurred between the last days of March and the first days of April 1982. After 40 years without eruptions, what remains of this natural wonder are the incredible landscapes it offers to adventurers who dare to peek into its crater.
In this beautiful place you can hike, as it takes an average of 3 hours to climb to the crater of the volcano from the nearest town. The crater is a dazzling valley of one kilometer in diameter. At its bottom is a lake of sulfurous waters that give off a thick fog. You can swim in the lake, but at your own risk.
It is located 20 km from the town of Chapultenango and 223 km from the city of Tuxtla Gutierrez. First take federal highway 190 towards the city of San Cristóbal Las Casas until you reach the El Escopetazo intersection. From there, take federal highway 195 until you reach the municipality of Ixtacomitán and head towards Chapultenango.
