La Selva El Ocote has an evergreen vegetation, with precious woods, palms, vines, lianas and epiphytic plants. The fauna records reach almost 600 species of vertebrates of all kinds: amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, in addition to invertebrates, which could reach 20,000 species, including butterflies and beetles. Many migratory birds only stay here in the coldest months of the year, but among the ones that live permanently, there are some at risk of extinction, such as the plumed eagle and the king vulture; There are also two types of toucans exclusive to Mexico.
La Selva El Ocote is home to the saraguato and spider monkeys, the tapir, the ocelot and the otter. Reptiles are shown in relative abundance, for example with numerous species of snakes.
Es posible acceder a esta reserva por caminos de terracería que se desprenden de la carretera federal 190, a la altura de Ocozocoautla, a sólo 60 kilómetros de Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
No debes dejar de ver el cauce del río La Venta, que corre a lo largo de 80 kilómetros custodiado por paredes de hasta 600 metros de altura, con abundante vegetación. En su mayoría de difícil acceso y escondidas entre las rocas y los árboles, hay cuevas que guardaron durante siglos entierros y ofrendas funerarias. Bajar a estos parajes requiere equipo especial de rappel y el debido entrenamiento, pero es posible conocer el cañón desde El Aguacero (a sólo 51 kilómetros de la capital chiapaneca), donde salen a la superficie las aguas de un río subterráneo.
