Very little is known about the origin of the zoques, when the Chiapas arrived in the territory, at that time called Quiché, the zoques were already there.
Currently part of the traditions and customs of this wonderful culture are preserved, among them we can highlight the clothing that in some populations still use it; The women's clothing follows the old manufacturing patterns, the huipil or blouse stands out, which few women from Copoya in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Copainalá, Técpatán, Ocozocoautla and Coapilla still make; It is an embroidered strip blouse called contado (referring to the way of counting the threads) and a wide lace totally embroidered with silk or cotton threads depending on the region, which is worn around the neck. These designs go from handcrafted birds and animals to almost geometric lines.
