Chiapas pottery dates from pre-Hispanic times when the foundations of technical and aesthetic wealth were laid. The most used techniques are hand modeling and open burning; in addition to the use of the lathe, the molds and the pastillage. It is common to use natural clay for the finishes, although the decorations with mineral engobes, the burnisher and the sgraffito are also used.
Amatenango del Valle stands out for its pottery cooked under the open sky. The large pots and the most varied catalog of animal figures are some of the most outstanding products. There is also pottery in Chamula.
