Just as lacquer is appreciated beyond the borders of Chiapas, something similar happens with amber. Chiapas is the only producer of amber in Mexico and its peoples offered it as a tribute in pre-Hispanic times.
The hands of the artisans rummage through the bowels of the earth around Simojovel, looking for amber, the resin that dates from approximately 40 million years ago and that has been fossilized throughout that time. Then they work it and deliver it in the shape of a heart, in a drop, in a bird or tree, or in the one that the imagination invents.
In Chiapas it is a habit to make a gift of amber when a friend comes to our house, when it is given it becomes a sure amulet of good luck. We must not forget the amber, the gem of Chiapas, which after being worked by the artists, becomes jewels with spectacular designs.
