Tuxtla Gutiérrez city downtown

The most emblematic buildings in the city center are located around the Civic Square: the Government Palace, —built between 1979 and 1981—, the Municipal Palace, the State Congress, which welcomes the swallows every afternoon, and the Cathedral of San Marcos. In the same square, two monuments stand out: the statue of Joaquín Miguel Gutiérrez, the city's eponymous hero, who fought for the establishment of federalism in the first half of the 19th century, and the Statue of Liberty, a traditional character in the center of the city since the first half of the 20th century.

In the center of the city, the curious traveler can appreciate step by step not only the daily life of Tuxtla but also some of the most important features of its heritage, such as the building of the old municipal palace, the chapels of neighborhoods such as Santo Domingo and El Calvario. You can also visit the traditional colors of the old market, and the particular rituals of the Zoque del Cerrito chapel or those of the very unique church of San Pascualito, where a skeleton saint is venerated.

Each of the neighborhoods in the center of the city has its own festival that is the occasion for the meeting of ancient Zoque traditions, such as the somé or offering, the mequé or fiesta, marimba music and indigenous instruments.
