The Hummingbird Dance, also known as Danza del Burrioncillo, is a pre-Hispanic tradition performed in Chiapa de Corzo, Chiapas, Mexico, during the festival of Saint Peter the Apostle on June 29. This dance, which represents the connection between nature and the cosmos, has been revived by researchers and cultural promoters.
The dance takes place within the framework of the Feast of Saint Peter and is associated with the summer solstice, symbolizing the energy and acceptance of nature within the life cycle. The music for the dance was recovered by the musician from Chiapa de Corzo, Conrado Coutiño. The performance takes place in emblematic sites of Chiapa de Corzo, such as La Pochota or the Ceiba tree near the Church of San Jacinto, concluding at the Church of El Calvario.
The Hummingbird Dance is a cultural expression that seeks to preserve the traditions and identity of Chiapa de Corzo. It is considered a dance icon and a symbol of the cultural richness of the people of Chiapas.
