Niluyarilo Flower Bearers

Chiapa de Corzo

In the Pueblo Mágico of Chiapa de Corzo, the tradition of the niluyarilo flower is lovingly preserved. This celebration, deeply rooted in local identity, tells the symbolic story of a child’s birth from the “niluyarilo” flower—a type of bromeliad that grows in the highlands of Chiapas.

During the December festivities, this flower takes on special meaning as it adorns the Nativity scene of the Christ Child, symbolizing divine protection and a spiritual connection with nature. The tradition comes to life through the “floreros” (bearers) men responsible for gathering the flowers and carrying them in pilgrimage from their communities.

The main journey takes place from December 14 to 21, followed by the velación (a candlelight vigil) on the 22nd and the symbolic birth on the 23rd. One of the most significant moments is the topada de la flor, a gathering where flower bearers from various municipalities come together to share this ancestral experience, strengthening both community and spiritual bonds.

This practice stands as a testament to the cultural richness of Chiapas—a living tradition that connects generations, honoring the past while celebrating the present.
