The International Marimba Festival, created in 1989 by the Chiapas State Council for Culture and the Arts (CONECULTA) and the Music Advisory Council, is one of the most representative musical gatherings in the state. Conceived to strengthen the cultural identity of Chiapas and promote the legacy of the marimba, the festival positions the state as a global reference for this emblematic instrument.
Over the years, the festival has established itself as a space for artistic and academic exchange, bringing together creators, performers, percussionists, marimba makers, researchers, and audiences from various regions. Ensembles and soloists participate from Chiapas, Tabasco, Oaxaca, Mexico City, and guest countries such as Guatemala, the United States, Belgium, Chile, Colombia, and Guinea.
Activities take place at strategic venues in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, including the Faculty of Music and University City of the University of Sciences and Arts of Chiapas (UNICACH), Terán Central Park, and the Emilio Rabasa Estebanel City Theater. The program includes free concerts, specialized workshops, master classes, introductions to performance techniques, stage presentations, and tributes to outstanding figures in marimba music.
As part of the festival, performances are also held in different municipalities across the state, with the aim of bringing this artistic experience to broader audiences and promoting the diversity of musical projects that enrich Chiapas’ cultural heritage.
The International Marimba Festival continues to promote the projection of Chiapanecan and concert marimba, while opening new perspectives for young musicians and consolidating Chiapas as a land of tradition, innovation, and musical resonance.
