The International Festival of Cultures and Arts Rosario Castellanos is one of the most important cultural celebrations in the Pueblo Mágico of Comitán de Domínguez. This event brings together local, national, and international artists through a diverse program that encourages cultural dialogue, reflection, and contemporary artistic expression.
Throughout the festival, activities include book presentations, exhibitions, lectures, theatrical performances, dance, storytelling, workshops, conferences, panel discussions, concerts, and stage productions. The program also features the Rosario Castellanos International Short Novel Award, a distinction that recognizes literary creation and strengthens cultural exchange at local, national, and international levels.
The festival honors Rosario Castellanos Figueroa, one of the most influential Mexican writers of the 20th century, who grew up in Comitán de Domínguez. A poet, novelist, essayist, and diplomat, her work transcended borders and left a fundamental legacy in literature and contemporary thought. Her voice, committed to gender equity and the rights of Indigenous peoples, remains relevant through landmark works such as Balún Canán, The Book of Lamentations (Oficio de tinieblas), The Woman Who Knows Latin…, and her distinguished poetry.
This festival consolidates Comitán de Domínguez as a cultural reference point in Chiapas and Mexico, strengthening its artistic vocation and reaffirming its identity as a meeting place for creativity, cultural diversity, and the promotion of national literary heritage.
