Expiatory Temple of the Lord of Calvary, Tuxtla Gutiérrez
The Feast of the Lord of Calvary is one of the most deeply rooted religious celebrations in Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Each year, this gathering brings together thousands of devotees and visitors who come to the historic Barrio del Calvario to light candles, fulfill promises, or participate in solemn masses.
For twelve days, from October 11 to 22, the celebration offers an extensive religious program that includes masses, Eucharistic ceremonies, processions, and community activities involving families, parish groups, invited communities, and priests from across the region.
The festivities begin on October 11 with the Opening Eucharistic Celebration and a procession through the main streets of the neighborhood, accompanied by marimba music and traditional acts. Throughout the novena, from October 11 to 19, daily masses are held at various times, each dedicated to different sectors of the community.
October 21 marks one of the most significant moments of the celebration: the coronation of the Holy Image, accompanied by the commemorative mass for the temple’s anniversary and special activities that reflect the community’s devotion. On October 22, the main day of the Feast of the Lord of Calvary, activities begin at 5:00 a.m. with traditional mañanitas and conclude in the afternoon with a parade of decorated floats through the neighborhood and the Closing Eucharistic Celebration.
Gastronomy is an essential element of this festivity. On October 21 and 22, the community prepares and offers traditional Tuxtla dishes, enjoyed by hundreds of visiting families. Additionally, regional snacks are sold daily in the chapel’s atrium.
