Temple of Saint Augustine, Tapachula de Córdova y Ordóñez

The Patronal Feast of Saint Augustine is one of the most representative religious and cultural celebrations in Tapachula and Teopisca. Each year, both cities honor their Patron Saint with an extensive program of activities that brings together local residents, national visitors, and pilgrims.

In Teopisca, the celebrations officially begin with a grand procession through the main streets, where women, men, and children participate carrying flowers, offering prayers for abundant harvests, and singing religious hymns accompanied by traditional music. The festivities continue with cultural events, sports activities, and musical performances in the main square.

In Tapachula, the Catholic Church prepares each year to welcome hundreds of devotees who visit the temple dedicated to the Saint, located in the heart of the city and considered a historic landmark. Beginning on August 20, masses and Eucharistic celebrations are held, while on August 27 a traditional marimba serenade takes place as a musical offering.

On August 28, the day dedicated to Saint Augustine, the traditional mañanitas are sung at dawn, followed by the main mass and a procession with the Saint’s image through the streets of Tapachula. The celebration, which dates back to 1818 when the image was brought by the Spanish, has become a key symbol of the religious and cultural identity of the Costa–Soconusco region and of Guatemala. Every year, devotees visit the temple to offer candles, present offerings, and give thanks for blessings and miracles.
