Temple of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, San Cristóbal de Las Casas

San Cristóbal de Las Casas, one of the oldest and most emblematic cities in Chiapas, preserves a rich cultural heritage manifested throughout the year in the celebrations of its traditional neighborhoods. Among them, the Festivity in Honor of the Virgin of Carmen stands out as a religious and community expression that brings together locals and visitors every July 16.

Dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, this celebration is considered one of the most significant in the historic center. It begins days in advance with activities that include processions and neighborhood fairs, where the aromas of local cuisine and the presence of artisans reflect the city’s cultural identity. The streets fill with music, family gatherings, and moments of devotion that reveal the deep spiritual roots of this Pueblo Mágico.

In the capital city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, one of the most representative elements of this festivity is the placement of the Virgin’s image on a carefully crafted altar where the space is decorated with dozens of fresh roses and a traditional Zoque branch arrangement, symbolizing life. This practice, inherited from Indigenous cosmovision, also coincides with the beginning of the canícula in the Zoque agricultural calendar, a key period for communities that maintain a close relationship with the land.

On the eve of July 16, the solemn coronation of the image is held, marking the beginning of a day of liturgical activities that bring together faithful from different regions.

The Festivity in Honor of  the Virgin of Carmen invites travelers to discover the spiritual and cultural essence of two important Chiapas destinations—San Cristóbal de Las Casas and Tuxtla Gutiérrez—offering an authentically Chiapanecan experience.
