The Feast of the Virgin of the Assumption is a religious and cultural celebration held every August in Ocozocoautla de Espinosa. Activities begin on August 10 with a pilgrimage to the pottery community of Ocuilapa de Juárez, continue on August 12 with the traditional festival at Rancho San Luis, and culminate on August 15 with the main celebration, which includes masses, processions, community events, concerts, fairs, and amusement rides.
According to oral tradition, the Virgin’s image once appeared in Ocuilapa and would mysteriously return there whenever moved to Ocozocoautla. Therefore, every year the faithful walk to Ocuilapa to pay homage as a sign of respect and reconciliation with her will. On August 12, the celebration continues at Rancho San Luis, where families from Coita gather to share music, food, and joy.
The main day, August 15, features solemn masses, processions, and the traditional Dance of Moors and Christians, representing the symbolic struggle between two cultures and reflecting the region’s religious syncretism. As night falls, the fairgrounds come alive with rides, traditional snacks, and lights in a festive community atmosphere. The Feast of the Virgin of the Assumption is a celebration where faith, legend, and cultural identity come together, strengthening Ocozocoautla’s collective spirit year after year.
