The Little Horse of Numbañulí (Caballito de Numbañulí) is a ritual dance belonging to the group of “Conquest Dances” in Chiapa de Corzo. In collective memory, this dance symbolizes the cultural resistance of the Chiapa people against colonization, depicting the confrontation between Indigenous peoples and the Spanish. This historical narrative continues to live on in daily life and finds renewed strength during Christian religious festivities throughout Chiapa de Corzo and the surrounding Chiapas region.
The Dance of the Little Straw Horse (Caballito de Petate) was performed in Chiapa de Corzo until the 1920s–1930s, according to oral testimony from Don Lisandro Coutiño. In 1998, the dance was revived thanks to research and cultural preservation efforts by a group of Chiapanecan historians and enthusiasts, including Alberto Vargas, Mario Nandayapa, Nereo Nigenda, Eduardo Martínez, and Gerardo Camacho.
