Dance of the Alferez and Nahuarés

Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, Chiapa de Corzo

At the heart of Chiapa de Corzo, the Dance of the Alféreces and Nahuarés stands as one of the region’s most representative cultural expressions. This traditional dance stages a symbolic struggle between two groups from the colonial period, becoming a legacy that preserves the memory and cultural richness of the Chiapanecan people.

The Alféreces, representing the Spaniards or conquistadors, wear yellow shirts, red pants, and a small plume, reflecting European influence. Meanwhile, the Nahuarés, symbolizing the indigenous peoples of Chiapas, wear cowboy-style outfits, scarves, monteras, and masks similar to those of the Parachicos, evoking the roots and indigenous identity of Chiapa de Corzo.

The dance is performed every August 8, as part of the festivities honoring San Jacinto. Through this performance, the resistance and strength of the indigenous peoples are remembered, keeping the history and spirit of the community alive.

The Dance of the Alferez and Nahuarés is an invitation to discover the cultural authenticity of Chiapa de Corzo, where every movement, costume, and sound testifies to the deep pride of the Chiapaneco people.
