Candlemas Day

02 de Febrero

Chiapas

Every February 2nd, Chiapas joins the celebration of the Day of Candelaria, a festivity that commemorates the presentation of the Baby Jesus at the temple and the purification of the Virgin Mary. In Mexico, this date also incorporates elements of pre-Hispanic origin and is distinguished by the preparation and enjoyment of traditional, varied, and delicious tamales.

In Chiapas, this celebration is lived with unique cultural richness, reflected in processions, masses, fairs, and dances that strengthen community bonds and local identity. Municipalities such as Tuxtla Chico, Acapetahua, San Fernando, and Cintalapa offer unforgettable experiences for those who wish to discover the most authentic traditions of the state.

In Tuxtla Chico, the streets turn into multicolored canvases with artistic carpets made of sawdust, flowers, corozo, and cascabillo—natural elements combined to create the popular rugs elaborated by entire families as part of the traditional fair of Santa María de la Candelaria.
In Acapetahua, the emblematic “Dance of the Moors” stands out—a theatrical dance that portrays historical tales and brings the community together through faith and memory.

San Fernando celebrates with the traditional Yomo dance, performed by thousands of women who fill the streets with color and joy in their vibrant traditional attire. In Cintalapa, this is the main festivity of the year. Located in the heart of a prosperous agricultural and livestock region, the city becomes a meeting point for those who wish to experience Candelaria with devotion and tradition.
