San Cristóbal de las Casas

This beautiful Pueblo Mágico, located in the Jovel Valley, is a colorful city that enjoys a temperate climate and at the same time a strategic location. It was founded by Diego de Mazariegos in 1528, as Ciudad Real de Chiapas, capital of the province. San Cristobal de Las Casas is the heart of theAltos of Chiapas, here converge rooftops, flowery patios, corner balconies, baroque facades, neoclassical and Mudejar style buildings, colorful handicrafts, exquisite cuisine, ceremonies, processions, popular festivals and ancient legends. Today the city is one of the most beautiful and original in Mexico and Central America, due to the evocative colonial image that has been preserved in its historic center over the centuries, in addition to the traditional daily life, where the Tseltal and Tsotsil ethnic groups come with their colorful costumes, from different communities to sell or exchange their products.

Our recommendations for your trip

San Cristobal de Las Casas is one of the most beautiful cities in Chiapas and Mexico. It is the heart of the Altos of Chiapas, with an evocative landscape; it is a city of adobe walls, clay tiles, with nature, culture, memory and evocation among pine forests. Being a city located at 2,200 meters above sea level, it enjoys a temperate climate so it's necessary to take into account the following:

  • The best months to visit it are from December to May when there is almost no rain.
  • From December to the beginning of March the weather can be cold with small drizzles or frosts with dense fog. It is important to wear cold weather clothing.
  • Keep in mind that the months of April, May and June are the warmest months (between 20º. to 28º), but don't forget that the afternoons and evenings can be very cool.
  • It is essential to wear comfortable shoes, sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Between June and the beginning of October, the rains are more frequent during the afternoon and night, so don't forget to bring an umbrella or raincoat.
